Conclusions

Multiplexing HTTP over, standard window size, TCP connections between international caches, connected by an asymetric satellite/terestrial link, offers significant performance advantages. The number of TCP connections between the proxies is important. To avoid the link being under utilised around 50 connections were required for an E3 satellite/fiber combination from NZ to the US. However additional connections are needed if the best page latency is required. In this case around 70 connections were required. Nothing in these results suggests the asymmetric delay case behaves differently to the asymmetric case.
