Internet Reachability
Hubble is a black hole and Internet topology discovery tool that uses 200 vantage points. It gathers ping, traceroute and BGP update data, to map the Internet daily and to regularly check for unreachability problems. Atlas is a project that will cover Europe and more, using small hardware devices that plug into routers/modems adjacent to user endhosts. It is intended to base the development of some aspects of Atlas on Hubble but with key emphasis on scaling up the number of vantage points used, by two orders of magnitude. Objectives include mechanisms designed to minimise the amount of active probing and other communication to and from the Atlas devices, whilst intelligently maintaining the desired level of accuracy and improving coverage. It is also desired to avoid the use of spoofed packets.
